Streaming Exclusive: Staying in My Comfort Zone

My mood for the day: I actually had a pretty bad cold and spent most of the day in bed. I had no desire to watch anything remotely intellectually stimulating. I wanted to make sure that it wouldn’t be an issue if I fell asleep while watching, as that was a rather likely possibility. What I watched: Amazon’s Mozart In the Jungle (S2:E3-S2:7) plus some Lush videos on … Continue reading Streaming Exclusive: Staying in My Comfort Zone

January 2018: Anne Goes Streaming Exclusive!

Hello friends! As almost anyone can tell, my blogging was not as active over the last few months as I would’ve liked. So as I try to “get back to normal” this month I thought it would be fun to give myself an easy blogging challenge that is still somewhat interesting for the rest of you. Ergo, Streaming Exclusive!! What does that mean exactly? It … Continue reading January 2018: Anne Goes Streaming Exclusive!

Albums to Listen to Instead of Taylor Swift’s ‘Reputation’

There are enough think pieces on the internet explaining why Taylor Swift is mildly irritating, so there’s relatively little point in me writing another one. What I HAVEN’T seen on the internet is a list of music for people who like Taylor the Musician, but are becoming more and more irritated with Taylor the Celebrity. Or maybe you have no problem with Taylor, and perhaps … Continue reading Albums to Listen to Instead of Taylor Swift’s ‘Reputation’

Do I Even Like Stranger Things?

People who have known me a long time know that it took me a ridiculously long time to finish the Harry Potter books. This isn’t because I thought the books were bad, it’s because I realized around 12 years old that I wasn’t reading out of genuine enjoyment, but out of social pressure. It was what everyone else was doing. It was something you did to feel relevant in the sort of bookworm social circles that 12-year-old me associated with.

The current version of this is Stranger Things. It’s not a BAD show. But the more I watch the more I can’t help but think that I’m not watching it out of genuine enjoyment, I’m watching because if I don’t watch it right now, someone might spoil it. It feels like a show I’m supposed to like. I WANT to catch up on Jane The Virgin, Crazy Ex Girlfriend, This Is Us, and Hell’s Kitchen. But I NEED to watch Stranger Things because I’m trying to have a blog about movies and tv and Stranger Things is something I should probably write about for SEO purposes. And just think of all the memes I wouldn’t understand if I didn’t watch Stranger Things. I NEED to be able to understand the memes and so apparently I NEED to watch Stranger Things.  Continue reading “Do I Even Like Stranger Things?”

Marshall Should’ve Been a Miniseries

So you may be vaguely aware of the fact that Chadwick Boseman is continuing his string of biopics about awesome, trailblazing black guys. Good for you Chadwick Boseman, you go Chadwick Boseman.

The latest of these of course is Marshall which seems to be getting relatively little hype despite being a decent movie about an important man with several B-list celebrities and also Kate Hudson. Continue reading “Marshall Should’ve Been a Miniseries”

I Like Lady Shows and I’m Proud

So while I was doing my 30 Pilots in 30 Days project, one of the rules was that I could only watch the pilots on my list, no binging the shows. One night, I was in the mood to binge. I wanted something shallow and perhaps even a little stupid. I’ve used Sex and the City for this purpose before but when I saw an ad for The Bold Type in my newsfeed, I couldn’t help but wonder if someone FINALLY pulled off a good “ambitious young female writer in NYC and friends” show so I decided to give it a shot.

The Bold Type/Freeform

If you’ve never watched the show, it’s about three millennial women working at a fictional version of Cosmo and their trials and tribulations both personally and professionally. Fun fact: it’s still about that even if you have watched the show, but I digress.

The Bold Type exceeded my expectations. It tackled many issues that a lot of other feminist shows are scared to, including sex work and Islamophobia. It explored how mainstream feminism can sometimes have unintended consequences, such as how sexual liberation can also make women feel bad about themselves if they’re not having sex. I realized within the first few episodes that I was falling in love with this show.

Then I had this very brief moment where I hated myself for falling in love with this show. It was supposed to be a shallow, stupid, Sex in the City type show, right? I was too cool for such shows, right?

Just A Short Essay On How Amazing Bojack Horseman Is

I’ve spent the past week binging my favorite Netflix Original, Bojack Horseman. Yes, Stranger Things, House of Cards, and Orange is the New Black, pale in comparison to the amazingness that is Bojack Horseman (insert something about how they’re totally different genres that shouldn’t really be compared here).

A Horror Cynic’s Review of It

So I’ve mentioned this surprisingly often for a blog that’s only been around for six weeks, but I don’t really like horror movies. But it just so happens that one of my best friends does, and one of the many reasons I appreciate her is that she drags me out of my cinematic comfort zone. We all need a friend like that.

So thanks to her, I saw It, which is about a demon sewer clown that scares children except maybe it’s not a literal clown but just a demon that represents all fears? I’m not really sure.

Movies I Should’ve Seen By Now: The Sixth Sense

As much as I like to play the role of movie buff in a room full of non-movie buffs, it only takes me about five minutes in a room full of actual movie buffs to remember that I haven’t seen a crapton of the movies that movie buffs enjoy talking about. So while I’d like to pretend that this new series is some sort of attempt to entertain my readers, it’s more just me trying to pressure myself to sit down and actually watch some of those. And I mean watch them properly: no commercials, swear words intact, staying off my phone, with all the lights out.

And so that’s how I watched The Sixth Sense, which marks the inaugural movie in this series. I even put my phone on airplane mode for about half of it, that’s how dedicated I was. The Sixth Sense is so well-regarded that Hollywood is still letting M. Night Shamaylan make movies 18 years later even though pretty much none of his work since has lived up to it and some of it is widely regarded to be epic failures.
